Commercial and Residential Buildings Only

Houston homeowners are increasingly installing window film as an affordable way to control their home’s winter warmth and comfort. Here’s why.

It’s that time of year when winter gets ready to make its annual visit to the Houston area. Despite our proximity to the Gulf, we still get our fair share of cooler temperatures; in fact, with average January highs of 62.9 °F and lows of 43.2 °F, Houston winters can be colder than those in Southern California and South Florida.

While winter may not be the same in Houston as it is in Minnesota, Houstonites still face the problem of keeping their homes warm and cozy in the winter. Unfortunately, those big, beautiful Houston windows can compromise a home’s heat retention, and sometimes the only solution is to crank the thermostat up.

Or is it?

Window Film Vs. Houston Winters
Houston homeowners are increasingly installing window film as an affordable way to control their home’s winter warmth and comfort. Both standard and newer low-emittance (low-e) window film act as a layer of insulation that prevents heat from escaping — especially important because windows are responsible for up to 30% of a home’s overall heat loss. But good window film can improve a window’s insulating properties by 92%.

Big Savings and Lower Carbon Footprint
Certain low-e window films retain up to 55% of the home’s heat in winter by reflecting the heat into the home rather than letting it pass through glass to the outside. Once installed, window film can offer homeowners year-round savings of about 5% to 10% of a home’s total energy bill. And according to the U.S. Department of Energy, the annual energy savings can be up to $465 when window film is installed on single-pane windows.

Because window film keeps heat from escaping, rooms warm up faster and stay warmer longer, decreasing the time an HVAC system needs to run. Less wear and tear translates into an HVAC system that can run cleanly and efficiently and that needs less maintenance, resulting in even more long-term savings and a smaller carbon footprint!

Summer Benefits

Window film can be just as beneficial during the hot Houston summer. Solar control window film helps keep interiors cool by rejecting up to 97% of infrared light and stopping 60% of the heat from coming through windows. Window film will also keep furniture from fading; offer privacy, safety, and visual appeal; and even protect your health.
